Robert J. Campos is a former Maricopa County sex crimes prosecutor. Mr. Campos gained a national reputation as a formidable prosecutor with his prosecution of Wilputte Sherwood, a former Chandler Catholic priest who sexually victimized thousands of people, including minors under the age of 18. In the early 1990’s, Mr. Campos was one of the very first prosecutors in the country to convict a priest and have him sentenced to prison for his offenses.

Mr. Campos, as a former prosecutor, not only handled thousands of cases, but established a reputation for aggressively litigating cases at trial when justice demanded that an offender serve a prison term. Mr. Campos therefore gained valuable experience and expertise in the prosecution and defense of sex cases. Mr. Campos worked with the finest experts in the country and received the very best national training.

Since 1996, Mr. Campos has utilized his extensive expertise to defend clients accused of a sex crime. Mr. Campos has defended people from all walks of life accused of a sex crime, including doctors, lawyers, police officers, detention officers, teachers and members of the clergy. Mr. Campos understands the enormous stress and fear that a client and his family faces when he or she is wrongfully accused of sex crime.

A criminal conviction for a sex crime can carry a lengthy and mandatory prison term. A defendant can be required to register as a sex offender, be placed on probation for life, wear an ankle monitoring device, be required to undergo sex evaluations which include polygraph testing and penile plethismograph testing. A conviction for a sex crime can destroy a person’s life. A defendant may find it impossible to find a place to live or employment. The court can also refuse to allow a convicted sex offender to have any contact with his or her children.

The ramifications of a wrongful conviction are serious. If you or a loved one is accused of a sex offense, do not make the mistake of hiring an unqualified or inexperienced attorney. Mr. Campos has over 26 years experience as an attorney. He worked as a prosecutor in the sex crimes division for 6 years. He has defended countless clients wrongfully accused of a sex offense. Mr. Campos has a great deal of trial experience and defends clients at trial. Mr. Campos has an impressive record of success. However, if you hire the wrong attorney you face serious consequences. For example:

Under Arizona law, the crime of possession of child pornography carries a mandatory minimum prison term of 10 years for each picture that is possessed. Sentencing must be consecutive for every picture possessed. What this means is that a defendant faces a minimum of 100 years in prison if he or she is convicted of possessing just 10 pictures.

A defendant convicted of Sexual Conduct of a Minor faces life in prison if the alleged victim is under the age of 12. Additionally, a defendant may not be entitled to get out of jail on bond or bail if the charge is one of the following: Sex Conduct with a minor and the minor is under 15 years of age or Child Molestation and the minor is under 15 years of age.

Robert J. Campos has the skill and experience required to obtain justice in your case. He will dedicate his time to investigate your case and prove your innocence. There are, unfortunately, times when the facts cannot be disputed and the State has overwhelming evidence of guilt. Even in cases that appear hopeless, Mr. Campos and his dedicated staff have been invaluable in mitigating the offense and obtaining a favorable sentence.

Mr. Campos has had clients that eventually must serve a sentence of imprisonment. However, even these clients have written to Mr. Campos and thanked him for his hard work and unfailing dedication to their case. Many clients have discovered that the sentence they received and results achieved were much better than other unfortunate people who did not hire Mr. Campos.

“Dear Robert,

[March 25, 2011]

I want to take the time to thank you for the efforts on my behalf that you and Lizet [secretary] undertook. After being here [Arizona Department of Corrections] for over a month I have come to understand that most inmates here on the same charges are receiving much greater sentences than I received. Most, on hearing of my two year sentence, are disappointed that their attorneys weren’t up to your efforts…

Again I thank you for the time you invested on my defense. I would be happy to write a reference on your behalf if you desire.”

If the police contact you and wish to speak to you, please do not speak to the police. Contact Mr. Campos first. The police may be pleasant. The detective may seem to act like you are innocent and that the investigation is a formality. Do not believe the police officer or detective that contacts you. Most officers already have their minds made up that you are guilty. The police are seeking to obtain evidence against you. Your statements to the police are the most damaging piece of evidence against you. Immediately tell the police that you want your attorney.

The key words are that YOU WANT AN ATTORNEY. Say nothing else. In fact, your loved ones should also ask for an attorney. If your wife, husband, brother, sister, father or mother wish to help you, they must also keep silent. The police will obtain incriminating information from your family. Your family does not have to speak to the police without a lawyer.

If you receive a phone call from someone and that person wishes to discuss an allegation that you committed some sex act. Hang up the phone. Do not continue to talk to this person. The phone call is most likely being recorded by the police. The caller is likely calling from the police department. This call is referred to as a CONFRONTATIONAL PHONE CALL. The entire purpose of the call is to trick you into admitting guilt.

The caller may say that he or she is undergoing counseling and the counselor suggested that an apology may make the caller whole. The caller may say he or she contracted a disease or became pregnant. Again, hang up. The caller is lying and seeking to get you to make an admission. Later, the police will arrest you. The police will already have a recorded statement from you. If you speak to the police, the police will trick you into making statements that contradict what you said on the tape. You will be made to look like a liar.

If the police arrive at your home and wish to search your home, do not give consent. Politely tell the police you refuse and they must obtain a warrant. If the police already have a warrant, again, make sure you state that you are NOT CONSENTING TO THE SEARCH. Be polite and cooperate with the police who are executing the search warrant but do not say anything and do not agree to the search.

Call Robert J. Campos immediately. If the warrant later turns out to be illegal, the evidence may be suppressed and cannot be used against you. However, if you also gave the police consent and the warrant was illegal, the evidence can be used against you.

Mr. Campos and his staff care about the clients who put their faith in the Firm of Robert J. Campos & Associates, P.L.C. Mr. Campos will treat you and your family with the respect and the dignity that you deserve. Mr. Campos and his staff are very knowledgeable and will work tirelessly to obtain justice in your case.
