If you or your loved one is arrested by the police, you will be eventually taken to jail. You will see a judge within 24 hours of your arrest. This is called your “initial appearance”. At your initial appearance the judge will tell you the charges that you face and the judge will determine whether or not to release you. The judge will also determine if you are entitled to bond.

You may not see another judge for many weeks after your initial appearance. Your initial appearance will be your first opportunity, and your most important chance, to convince the judge to let you get out of jail.
